I began work on Fool’s Quarry during the early blockout phase, before the theming and visual identity were fully established. This gave me the opportunity to explore and help define the direction of the space. I focused on reinforcing the island’s chaotic and dangerous tone while supporting the narrative through environmental storytelling. A key theme I developed was sulphur mining, which aligned closely with the lore of the area. This introduced elements like toxic gas emissions and the impact on the town’s residents, including black lung, helping to ground the space in a more lived in and believable reality while giving the town a distinct visual identity. The island itself is remote due to these dangers, which influenced how the settlement evolved. Early ships that once reached its shores have been stripped and repurposed, their materials used to construct buildings and mining equipment. This approach helped reinforce the isolation of the location while adding a layer of history and resourcefulness to the environment.
This work was highly collaborative, and the final result is a testament to the talent and dedication of the entire team. Huge shoutout to everyone involved! Without their incredible contributions, this project would not have reached the level it did.
